Young Athletes & Developmental Sports

The Young Athletes Program (YAP) introduces children ages 2–7 years to the joy and benefits of sports through simple, play-based activities. It builds basic skills like running, kicking and throwing while preparing them for formal sports participation at age 8.

As children grow, Developmental Sports offers an age-appropriate introduction to sport-specific skills for children ages 6–12 years, with and without intellectual disabilities.

Parents are trained to use easily available household items for activities, ensuring children can participate from home as well as in school or community settings.

Unified Sports

Unified Sports brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team.

From football and basketball to golf and skating, these teams build:

  • Physical fitness
  • Skills and game understanding
  • Friendships based on respect and teamwork

Inspired by the belief that training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding, Unified Sports is now part of nearly all Special Olympics disciplines – at local, state, national and international levels, including the Special Olympics World Games.
